Who we are

Rotary International is the world’s largest volunteer humanitarian service organisation. For more than 110 years, Rotarians have used passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects. From literacy and peace to water and health, we are always working to better our world, and we stay committed to the end.

Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self, reflects our belief in unselfish volunteer service.

Service in the Community

Rotary’s main objective is service — in the community, in the workplace, and around the globe. The 1.2 million Rotarians who make up more than 35,000 Rotary clubs in nearly every country in the world believe that changing the world starts with a commitment to Service Above Self.

People Unite

Rotarians see a world where people unite and take action to create a lasting change around the world, in communities and in ourselves. Our clubs are open to people of all cultures and ethnicities and are not affiliated with any political or religious organisations.

What is Rotary

We are People of Action

We share a unique passion for taking action to improve our communities and the world.
Where others see problems, we see solutions.

Together we Inspire

Motivated by the enduring connections and positive change we bring to communities and the world; we encourage others to take action. Our communications convey hope, enthusiasm, and passion.

Together we empower women

We are dedicated to empowering women by providing the resources, opportunities, and support they need to achieve their full potential.

Together we Transform

Every day, in our communities and around the world, our neighbours face tough challenges — conflict, disease, and lack of clean water, health care, education, and economic opportunity.

As Rotarians, we have a vision of what’s possible, then mobilise other leaders and experts to take action and see it through.

“Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.”

Our Seven Areas of Focus

The causes we target to maximize our impact are called our Areas of Focus. Our most successful and sustainable projects and activities fall within these areas.

Through global grants and other resources such as Marshalling at the Cape Town Cycle Tour, we can support our service efforts in the following areas:
